What to expect when booking?Initial Consultation - After you email or call to inquire about counseling, I’ll reach out to set up a time for a 10-15 minute phone call. During that time, I’ll hear a little bit about what’s going on and tell you about myself so that we can decide together if it will be a good fit for us to work together. If it is - I’ll schedule your first session and send you a link to an online portal where you can fill out paperwork before we meet. If it isn’t - There are many different types of counselors in the world and I might not be the best fit for everyone. If this is the case, my goal is still to help connect you with someone who can help, so I’ll do what I can to provide referrals or direction with that goal in mind.

Why consider therapy rather than just talking with friends and family?Having a social support system is incredibly important, but friends and family don’t have professional training in how to listen to help you feel supported, and they often feel most inclined to tell you what you should do. Talking with a counselor is different because we can provide support from an unbiased perspective and with the foundational knowledge of relevant and up-to-date research. There is also something relieving and freeing about talking with someone whom you can trust to keep your conversations confidential. I want to create a space where my clients can be radically honest as they share their thoughts, feelings, and values. From there, I can help them begin to recognize what they need to move toward personal growth and healing.

What happens in the first session? How it goes often depends on the client’s level of comfort. I understand that when we first meet…I’m a stranger. Some people come in totally ready to dive in and get to work while others want to go slower and get to know me a bit. Either way, my goal for the first session is to get to know you and your needs and show you that with me, you really are safe, seen, and supported. I also like to take this time to begin building some goals that will help structure our time together.

How long will the counseling process take?Because I tailor my counseling approach to each client, there is no way to say specifically how long counseling will take. Regardless of what brings you to counseling, I believe someone who is actively involved in their own process will begin to recognize some self-understanding/growth within the first couple of months. I always check in with clients to be sure we are working toward their goals in a way that is helpful for them and we can always make adjustments if necessary. I want to be in tune with clients and am open to feedback because it helps me grow as a counselor whose goal is always to support my clients best.

Whether you’re an overwhelmed adult considering therapy for yourself or a parent seeking help for your teen, choosing a therapist is an important decision. My hope in forming Space for You is that you will come into my office, take a breath, and know that you’re safe, seen, and supported. In this space you can take time specifically for yourself to dive into uncomfortable places and process your past experiences, understand yourself better, work toward growth, and find peace in your life. Doing this within the safety of a secure relationship with a therapist you trust can be absolutely life-changing.
